Natural Immunity Boost Tonic
Cold and flu season is here, and sometimes we need a little extra support for our energy and immune systems.
I love using food as medicine, and this is one of my favorite simple, yummy tonics to make when I feel like my body needs a little extra support.
It combines strawberries, garlic, ginger, apple cider vinegar, honey, and cayenne pepper, all in one delicious little drink.
The ingredients provide antioxidants and plant compounds that can support healthy immune function and digestion.
And honestly, it tastes much better than most "health tonics." 😋
Natural Immunity Boost Recipe
Ingredients
6 strawberries
1 garlic clove
1-inch piece of fresh ginger
1 capful apple cider vinegar
Honey to taste
2 shakes of cayenne pepper
Water, as needed
I recommend using organic ingredients when possible.
Instructions
Add all of the ingredients to a blender with enough water to blend everything smoothly.
Blend well.
Pour into a glass jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator.
Sip throughout the day.
You can adjust the ingredients to your taste. I like mine with plenty of ginger, honey, and just enough cayenne to give it a little kick. 🔥
Why I Love This Tonic
Each ingredient brings something different to the table.
🍓 Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidant compounds that support overall immune health.
🧄 Garlic contains sulfur compounds, including allicin, that have been studied for their antimicrobial and immune-supportive properties.
🫚 Ginger has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is traditionally used to support digestion.
🍎 Apple cider vinegar adds acidity and flavor and can be part of a balanced digestive routine.
🍯 Honey provides natural sweetness and has soothing properties, especially when you're dealing with a scratchy throat.
🌶️ Cayenne adds heat and contains capsaicin, a compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Together, these make a simple, flavorful tonic that I love reaching for when I want to support my body during cold and flu season.
I recently used this when I felt a cold coming on and felt like it helped me get back on my feet quickly.
Of course, one drink isn't going to magically prevent or cure an infection. Your immune system is complex, and sleep, nutrition, stress, movement, hydration, and overall health all matter.
But sometimes the simplest practices are the ones we actually keep doing.
Hit the reset button on your body. ✨

A Note From Dr. Z
If you have an autoimmune condition, remember that "immune boosting" isn't always the goal.
With autoimmunity, we want to support healthy immune regulation and balance, not simply stimulate the immune system.
Food, herbs, sleep, stress regulation, and lifestyle can all be important pieces of that bigger picture.
And if you're taking medications or have a chronic health condition, check with your healthcare provider before making significant changes or starting herbs or supplements.
Research
Research supports the role of nutrients and plant compounds found in foods such as berries, garlic, ginger, and turmeric in supporting antioxidant defenses, healthy inflammatory pathways, and normal immune function.
