Why Do Women Crave Chocolate During Their Period? (Cacao Latte Recipe)
One of the questions I get asked all the time is…
“Why do I crave chocolate during my period?”
Believe it or not, your body may actually be asking for something deeper.
When we menstruate each month, we naturally lose blood.
Because blood contains iron, our bodies often begin craving iron-rich foods to replenish what we’ve lost.
One of nature’s richest sources of iron is raw cacao.
So sometimes what our body is truly craving isn’t processed chocolate loaded with sugar.
It’s cacao.
One of my favorite ways to enjoy it is as a warm Cacao Latte.
I drink one every morning.
I don’t drink coffee.
This is my morning ritual instead.
I sip slowly and intentionally feeling the medicine flow through my body
It’s nourishing, comforting, naturally energizing, and it supports my mood without the crash.
Cacao also contains theobromine, a naturally occurring compound that boosts serotonin, supports alertness and feelings of well-being.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, cacao can be a beautiful way to nourish and support the body when combined with an overall healthy lifestyle.

Research
Research suggests that cacao contains flavonoids and polyphenols that support cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and healthy inflammatory balance.
Women also have increased iron requirements during their reproductive years, making iron-rich foods an important part of overall wellness.
